Giving back to the community has always been a large belief of mine for my parents taught me at a young age that giving back is an important thing. So when Mr.Wimmer brought the Apollo group the idea of Give Local York, I was immediately intrigued. Give Local York would be a community event that will try to raise as much money as possible in a span of 24 hours for local businesses, nonprofits, and charities, The event was very successful and a total of $1,478,837 was raised!
Most people are familiar with organizations such as the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. They have helped countless persons around the nation and world, from the less fortunate to those trying to collect their lives after a natural disaster. These organizations are only able to do what they do because of the resources and help they are provided with through donors’, money, time, and talent. This idea of giving these things and among other things , helps with allowing the community to prosper as a whole.
Art
For the art portion, I collabed with one of my fellow Apollo peers, Nyla Marsh, to create 2 posters that would help spread the word about Give Local York. One of the posters showcased the ASPCA, to show how giving would help such non-profits to allow them to do what they do, In this case, help the ASPCA save and take care of more animals . The other poster, was basic, giving the basic information about Give Local York. It included the Give Local York logo and website, where people can learn more about the event. The poster also consisted of 2 of the following quotes:"Charity sees the need, not the cause," and "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." This quotes where used to help influenece people to give. Although I am proud of the two posters, I do wish I could have focused more on them and better enhance the important message of giving.
English
For the English portion, I created an editorial on the different ways for people to give and created written notes for the students on our announcement services, CTV, to read. The written notes consisted of basic information about Give Local York such as why the event is happening when it will happen, how students can help, etc. The edictal gave an abundance of information on how people can give, in the form of money, time and talent. I targeted the information to the teen audience due to me being one myself and because a lot of us teens want to help but just don't know how. So among telling how you can give, I told where. For example teens can volunteer to read to children at the local library , dog walking for shelters such as the ASPCA, being a youth mentor at summer camp, etc. For more information on how and where a teen you know or if you're a teen yourself, can give, visit the following informational and safe website: https://www.signupgenius.com.
Social Studies
For my social studies portion, I created an informational mind map that answered the question of why people should give. Give Local York was able to be successful as it was not only because of big business donations, but because of people such as you and I that gave out of our own pockets. Some persons don’t donate to charitable organizations because they often ask that question of why they should donate. I included much information to answer this question using 5 topics: It is important for the community, it is needed for charities and non-profits to do what they do, there are physical and mental benefits for yourself , and it enhances the basic morals of spreading love, showing gratitude , etc. To see more of this mind map click the following link: https://mm.tt/1084235109?t=BiHdHXnuCN
