For English I wrote three songs and a paper. My three songs are about people who were oppressed in jail and about how they changed their lives. In my old chain gang song it's about a group of oppressed criminals making fun of their oppressor. I used certain code words that they would use back then to make fun of the oppressors. For my modern song I wrote it from the point of view of criminals that were wrongly accused and thrown in jail. It's about them singing through their troubles of being oppressed. My third song is a gospel song about changes in a person to better themselves and wanting a second chance. They found God and ask for people to forgive. The song is about second chances. Then for my paper I talked about the history of chain gangs and what happens to people when they go to jail.
My history component for my project
For history I wrote a paper about the history of chain gangs and about how they've changed, but some qualities remain the same. They don't use chains anymore, but most criminals are still forced to work even if they're paid too. The paper also has a story about criminals who changed their world around and changed themselves for the better before being killed by a firing squad since they were on Death Row. I described how music has affected their lives and how it has helped them through their time in prison.
My art component for my project
For art I recorded the three songs that I wrote. I used different objects to create the beat and music behind the lyrics. Some of the objects I used was glass, sandpaper, shovels, my shoe, and claps. I also used my piano for the gospel song, so there were steady beats as well. I recorded everything in iMovie and edited the recordings which was pretty difficult because the clip wouldn't shorten to the length I needed, but it was fun to try and problem solve it. For the lyrics, I had Robert sing the solo parts and then another guy helped him sing the chorus parts. Robert did a good job of singing because I gave him zero directions considering that's what they had while they came up with these songs. He came up with a beat and tune all by himself and it sounded really good. The volume is a tad soft on it, but you still hear all the elements.
Context and content of my overall project
When I began writing my songs I looked at the what was happening in that time period of what kind of resources they had. So for my old chain gang song I had the chains banging together and a shovel digging to show how back then that's how they made their beat. They didn't have a piano, a flute, or any kind of instrument. The world was their instrument and they made up song to make themselves feel happier. All three of my songs were made to help the moral of people in jail. For my modern pop song I wrote it from the perspective of a wrongly accused men because in this day and age we are so quick to judge people on their culture or how they look. Finally, for my last song I wrote in from a man who has done wrong and is changing his way because my philosophy is there are no bad people, there are just bad decisions that lead us off the wrong path. When you're in jail you can turn your whole life around and become a better person. In the song, the man is asking for forgiveness for everything he has done. My songs were all written according to their time period and what was happening in that time period.
